In Geoffrey of Monmouth, he was the son of King Constantine of Britain and brother of Aurelius Ambrosius and Uther. When Constantine died, Vortigern persuaded Constans to leave the monastery and become king. However, he was only a puppet king and eventually Vortigern had him  assassinated.
