Carl of Carlisle

In Sir Gawain and the Carle of Carlisle, the carl was a giant under a spell who was host to Gawain, Kay and Bishop Baldwin. One of the variations of the beheading game, the spell is broken when, at his own behest, his head was duly cut off by Gawain. Gawain married his daughter. Arthur knighted him and made him Lord of Carlisle and a Knight of the Round Table.
