King Arthur in Hollywood

Camelot (1967) VHS Starring Richard Harris

VHS widescreen, DVD

Camelot: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, Audio Cassette

Most critics pan this 1967 film version of the Lerner-Loewe musical as appalling or cheap but the music sells itself and the close-ups of the strongly dramatic scenes work on the smaller screen. The film won Oscars for Costumes, Scoring, and Art Direction/Set Decoration. Joshua Logan seemed to emphasize the stars even when they didn't sing the songs and less the set, almost attempting to create the allusion of a theatre size set rather than the world. Lerner and Loewe's story more closely follows T. H. White than Malory starting from the marriage of Arthur and Guinevere and ending with Arthur outside the battlements of Lancelot's castle. The love triangle stars are King Arthur (Richard Harris), Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave), and Sir Lancelot (Franco Nero).
